Marianna Simnett

Crowns, 2022 - 2024

The Crowns are a series of bronze sculptures dedicated to daemon goddesses, fearsome figures who embody strength, madness, frenzy, and transformative power. The British-Croatian artist’s attraction to raging goddesses and monstrous creatures derives from an overarching interest that she’s pursued in recent works in how such beings function as manifestations of difference, breakers of category, and resistant Others. This new series literally “crowns” such figures by dedicating ornate headgear comprised of accumulations of individual bronze animal figurines to a range of goddesses.
