This series of watercolours relates to her film installation Winner, which premiered at Hamburger Bahnhof in May 2024. Adapted from Graham Greene’s 1954 short story The Destructors, Simnett’s film is performed by a group of contemporary dancers who role-play as fans, players, and wardens. Morphing between human and animal form, they are on a quest to wreak havoc on and around the pitch. The watercolours created while Simnett researched the film delve into professional sport’s socially constructed power hierarchies, crowd psychology, and the constant pressure to perform.
