An overarching interest in storytelling pervades Marianna Simnett’s interdisciplinary practice. This foray into oil painting is driven by a desire to experiment with the narrative flow of images beyond time-based media. While film presents a linear visual narrative, Simnett’s paintings are constructed in sedimentary layers, functioning as short stories that collapse different temporalities and images into a single surface. Built up over many days, she employs numerous layers of translucent paints to create a shimmering, glass-like effect.
